    Social Media - Body Image

"I feel unworthy. I just don't feel great. I don't feel pretty. I don't feel right. I don't feel like I'm up to the beauty standard that women kind of have to uphold," ( CQ-Roll Call, Inc 2021)

"Instagram fuels both body-image issues and social connections, teen girls say." The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 6 Oct. 2021, p. NA. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/A678022757/OVIC?u=csunorthridge&sid=primo&xid=15083344. Accessed 13 Nov. 2022.

The value of the work to my paper is that Instagram, other social media platforms, and the media, in general, have affected the way I view my body. Having social media at my fingertips for me means I am constantly comparing myself to celebrities and models, which results in me developing body image issues. Here a girl has given her raw emotions about what it feels like to be trapped in an endless cycle of comparing yourself to others and feeling bad about yourself. Similar to how I experience a constant need to scroll through endless snippets of people’s lives only to compare myself. The article also gave me an insight into how we as a society acknowledge how toxic social media can be, yet we choose to continue using these platforms, which is something I can further touch on in my essay.

    Academic Burnout

“Researchers have indicated that emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and feelings of low personal accomplishment can be experienced in students’ learning process, course stress, course load, and so forth (Balogun et al., 1996; Lingard et al., 2007). Walburg (2014) reviewed the academic burnout in high school students and confirmed the three-dimensional construct of academic burnout.” (Wu, Wang, Wang, Li 2022).

Wu K, Wang F, Wang W and Li Y (2022) Parents’ Education Anxiety and Children’s Academic Burnout: The Role of Parental Burnout and Family Function. Front. Psychol. 12:764824. doi: 10.3389/fpsyg.2021.764824

The value of the work to my paper is that I personally experienced academic burnout during high school, therefore I can connect to the article. All throughout elementary school and middle school, I was praised for my academic achievements, but when I went to high school it seemed like everyone around me was smarter than I was. Here a study found that academic burnout is caused by feelings of low personal accomplishment, course stress, course load, etc. This is exactly what started my academic burnout because compared to my peers I felt I wasn’t as accomplished as they were and the feeling of low academic achievement plus a heavier course load took a toll on me. I can dive into the more scientific aspect of academic burnout with this article so I can further elaborate on it in my essay.
